Indians Earn Dramatic Win In 9; Cubs Stay Alive
MENOMINEE----The Gladstone Indians will play in the American Legion State Tournament at Adrian College next week. That much was guaranteed after the boys came from behind to pull out a dramatic 5-4 win over the Menominee Red Wave Thursday night at the U.P. Zone Five Championship Tournament at Spies Field. Meanwhile, the Escanaba Cubs rallied to beat Sault Ste. Marie, 2-1, in a loser's bracket game to stay alive in the tournament. Escanaba will need to win two games on Friday to also punch a ticket to States. Hancock has also qualified for that six-team tournament. Gladstone fell behind 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, but then scored a run in the bottom of the fourth as Hayden Hardwick doubled home Cody Frazer. Menominee got that run back in the top of the sixth, but the Indians got closer by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Hunter Garling RBI single, and on a pop fly by Christian Tackman that landed in the outfield, scoring the team's third run. Menominee threated to score in the ninth inning as an error and an intentional walk to Landon Maccoux put two on base. But Indians pitcher Christian Groleau was able to wiggle off the hook, and the Tribe batted in the bottom of the ninth with a chance to win. Jurek led off with a single in the bottom of the ninth, but the next two batters made outs. That brought up Hardwick, and he ripped one up the gap to the fence. Jurek scored all the way from first base, and Gladstone celebrated its second straight tight victory. And this one sends the Indians to Adrian College, where the team played in the state tournament back in 2005.

Groleau, who suffered a knee injury two weeks ago, was good enough to throw the final five innings. Pearson gave up just two base hits, and allowed only one run...which was not earned. Groleau walked three and fanned two. Ryan Woods took the loss for Menominee, which will play in the loser's bracket against Kingsford on Friday. Woods went all 8 2/3 innings, giving up ten hits, five runs (two earned), with two walks and three strikeouts. Frazer and Hardwick each had three hits. The Indians will face Hancock on Friday at 5:00 ET. The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. The teams played a tight game for seven innings before the Cubs emerged with a 2-1 victory to improve to 2-1 in the tourney. The Travelers got a run in the second inning against Cubs starter Ben Kleiman, but Kleiman, as he has done all summer long, kept the Travelers off of the board. Finally, in the fifth inning, Escanaba pushed across two runs as Devin Olsen was hit by a pitch, Hunter LaMarch doubled, and the runs were driven in by Brandon Punzel and Bailey Lamb. Andrew Sedlar relieved Kleiman on the mound and got the save. The Cubs need two wins on Friday to make it to the state tournament. They will face Marquette first, at 2:00 ET. Then, if Escanaba wins, the boys would play either Kingsford or Menominee in another loser's bracket game at 5:00 on Friday.
