BIG ROAD WIN: NMU Ladies Upset UW-Parkside

This story was written by NMU Sports Information

KENOSHA, Wis. -
The Northern Michigan women's basketball team scored a single-quarter season-high 28 points in the second while also holding Parkside to a single-quarter season-low of six points in the same frame to hang on for a big 83-76 road victory on Saturday afternoon.

In the second quarter, the Rangers shot just 2-9 (22.2%) while committing eight turnovers for arguably their worst quarter of the season. On the contrary, Northern shot 10-17 (58.8%) during that same stretch for its best quarter this campaign.

After posting a career-high 24 points on Thursday at Purdue Northwest, Jacy Weisbrod upped her new best, pouring in 27 points on 9-16 shooting and a 6-10 clip from beyond the arc. Makaylee Kuhn added another 20, making it back-to-back games that the pair have gone for 20+. CJ Romero hit a season-high 10 points while Sarah Newcomer also matched that as the fourth Wildcat in double figures.

The Rangers made a game of it late, going on a very quick 10-0 run in less than a minute of action to cut the deficit to six with two minutes to go in the game, but the Wildcats shot 11-15 (73.3%) from the charity stripe in the final frame to hold on for the road win.

Win the victory, the Wildcats jumped the Rangers in the GLIAC standings. NMU now sits at 6-2 while the Rangers dropped to 5-2. Overall, the Green and Gold hold a 12-5 record.

Jacy Weisbrod stayed hot from downtown right from the get go, knocking down a triple on the team's opening offensive possession. Her second three came two minutes later as the teams exchanged the lead in the early minutes.

The Rangers closed out the opening quarter with a 16-6 run over the next seven minutes to lead 21-14. NMU battled foul trouble, committing six fouls to just one from Parkside in the first frame. This resulted in six more attempts at the charity stripe for UWP.

The Green and Gold silenced the high-powered Rangers offense in the second quarter, as they shot just 2-9 (22.2%) in the quarter while committing eight turnovers. The score was tied 27-27 with five minutes remaining, but the Wildcats soared on a 15-0 run to close the half, capped off by a running buzzer-beater off the glass from near half court from Braelyn Torres, as the 'Cats led 42-27 at the break.

It was an all-around display of dominance for the Wildcats in the second quarter in which they held Parkside to a single-quarter season low of six points while pouring in a single-quarter season high 28 points themselves. Weisbrod added a dozen points to her total for 18 in the half on 7-10 shooting. The next closest scorer in the game had six.

Did it stop there for the Wildcats? Surely not. The first points out of the half came off the hands of Weisbrod from downtown, capping off an improbable 18-0 run stretching back to the middle minutes of the second quarter. Makaylee Kuhn would score 11 of the next 13 for NMU before Weisbrod connected on her sixth triple, tying a career-high 24 points, to go ahead 61-40. That score would hold heading to the final stanza.

The Rangers made it a game in the fourth quarter, scoring an impressive 36 points in the final 10 minutes. They rallied all the way back to a six-point game after a sudden 10-0 run in less than a minute, but the Wildcats persevered, knocking down foul shots down the stretch to hang on for a big road victory, 82-71.
