Mountaineers, Braves Come Up Short In Kalamazoo

(Lewis Berry photo)

KALAMAZOO---The Gladstone Braves and Iron Mountain Mountaineers both lost in the MHSAA Team State Finals on Friday in Kalamazoo. The Braves lost to Clinton in Division Three, 51-24, while the Mountaineers fell to New Lothrop in Division Four, 36-35.

GLADSTONE BRAVES VS CLINTON

In D-3, Gladstone won two of the first three matches on decisions. Drew Hanson defeated Connor Younts at 112 pounds on a 3-0 decision, then 125-pounder Michael Brazeau defeated Zak Shadey on an 11-6 decision, tying the match at 6-6.

But the Red Wolves got a tough 5-1 decision from 130-pounder Chase Packard over Gladstone’s Austin Solis, and then ran off a string of five straight pins to take control of the match at 39-6.

The Potier brothers made quick work of their opponents to get two pins for the Braves. Cole Potier needed 39 seconds to pin Jack Felts at 171, and then Hunter Potier crushed Clinton’s Wyatt Hicks in 15 seconds to win at 215 pounds.

Gladstone’s final win of the day came when heavyweight senior Brett Boudreau pinned Clinton’s Hazma Rafferty in 1:39.

IRON MOUNTAIN COMES CLOSE VS HORNETS

Earlier in the day, Iron Mountain faced New Lothrop, and did well in the middle weight classes. Shawn Mcguire defeated the Hornets’ Dalton Birchmeier on a 4-1 decision at 130 pounds, and Evan Haferkorn got a Mountaineer pin at 145 when he fell Dominic Casciano with just three seconds left in the second period.

Mason Kivi came through with a pin over Jack Kulhanek in 3:57 at 152 pounds, giving Iron Mountain a 15-12 lead in the match.

Then the Stroud boys delivered for the Mountaineers, although Parker Stroud could not quite get the pin of Colton Symons at 160. He settled for a 17-2 Tech Fall win, which gave Iron Mountain five points rather than six. Fulton Stroud took care of business at 171 pounds as he pinned Brady Gross in 1:13, putting IM ahead in the match, 26-12.

But the Mountaineers did not have a 215 or 285 pounder, so both matches were forfeited, and the Hornets got a pin at 189,

So with three matches left at 103, 112, and 119, Iron Mountain trailed on the scoreboard, 30-26. Mountaineer 103-pounder Alexander Wilson needed a pin to put IM back on top, but had to settle for a 12-8 decision over Blake Wending.

IM was within 30-29, but Hornets’ 112-pounder Daven Lockwood clinched the match with a pin over Shyna Hruska in 39 seconds. IM got a pin from Tyler Winch early in the second period of his 119-pound match, but the Mountaineers ended up a point short, 36-35.
