This story was written by NMU Sports Information

MARQUETTE–
Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer scored two second half goals to take a 2-1 victory over Purdue University Northwest in the team's last nonconference match before conference play begins.

Senior Jamie Montgomery (Gaithersburg, Md.) gave the Wildcats the lead in the 67th minute. With the ball on the right side of the box, Montgomery brought the ball to the corner of the box and fired a shot with her left foot past the PNW goalkeeper, putting the ball into the left side of the net for her third goal of the season.

Entering the game, sophomore Caroline Halonen (Hartland, Mich.) had taken 25 shots but was unable to put one into the net. With eight minutes to go in the game, the sophomore scored the game winner for her first goal of the season.

The Pride scored a goal in the 79th minute to tie the score. With just eight minute to play, PNW was called for a foul inside the box, giving Halonen a penalty kick opportunity. She took advantage by placing her shot into the bottom right corner of the net to move NMU to a 2-1 lead and the eventual victory.

Halonen led the Wildcats with nine shots while Montgomery posted four shots, three of which were on goal.

Sophomore Kiera Scanlan (De Pere, Wis.) and freshman Gwen Kiilunen (Brighton, Mich.) both added two shots. As a team, the Wildcats outshot the Pride 21-6, and on goal bested PNW 10-3.

In goal, junior Brianna Frontuto (Luxemburg, Wis.) tallied three saves and picked up her second victory of the season.

The Wildcats improved to 2-5 on the season while the Pride are now 1-5-1 overall. NMU returns to action Friday to start Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Ferris State University.
