EXTRA INNINGS BLUES: Marquette Eliminated

GLAWDIN---The Marquette Blues American Legion baseball team stayed alive in the state tournament on Friday with a 3-2 win over the Gladwin Lightning. But the Blues couldn't hold an 8-4 lead in their second game against Rosebush, and lost, 9-8.

In the first game of the day, Jon Jason's RBI single brought home Pete VandenAvond with the tie-breaking run in the top of the seventh inning. Then after Blues pitcher Kyle Frusti hit two batters in the bottom of the seventh, he got a ground ball to end the ocntest.

Marquette had trailed, 2-0, until Jake Peterson doubled home two runs with two out in the top of the fifth inning. Frusti went the distance, scattering six hits and allowing only one earned run. He walked one and struck out four, throwinh 104 pitches.

The second game was a rematch of the first game of the tournament, when Marquette lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Rosebush in eight innings. It looked like this one would be much different, though, as Marquette led, 8-4, after scoring three runs in the third inning and adding four more runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Brendan Kaski had a two-run single in the third inning to put the Blues in front, 4-2, and after Rosebush tied it in the bottom of the inning, Marquette went to work in the top of the fourth. Hogan Nemetz singled in the go-ahead run, then after an error scored one run, Kaski doubled home two runs to give the Blues an 8-4 lead.

Rosebush Pot 383, located just outside of Mount Pleasant, tied the game in the fifth inning, and then won it on a base hit by Josh Schell in the bottom of  the eighth inning.

Kaski pitched the first six innings for Marquette befpore he reached his 105 pitch limit. He gave up eight runs (only four earned) on eight hits and four walks. Cooper Myers pitched the rest of the way, and the hit by Schell was the only one he gave up.

Rosebush used five pitchers, with Jack Payton earning the win in relief.

Alex Wetherbee, Owen Foust, and Kyle Borodychuk all had two hits for Rosebush.

Kaski had two hits and three RBI for Marquette, and Henriksen had a hit and walked three times.  Marquette finished its season with a 19-15 overall record.
