Big Second Half Leads Eskymos Past Alpena, 21-0

ALPENA---The Escanaba Eskymos played their first football game in more than two decades without Dan Flynn as the head coach Friday night. And it turned out to be a successful debut for new Coach Jim Hansen as the Eskymos beat the Wildcats, 21-0.

"I thought we played well," Hansen said. "We have a young team. It was 0-0 at halftime, and it was a good half for both teams. But there were a lot of mistakes. A penalty here, a high snap there. What we have to work on is increasing our intensity even more."

David Falish led his team on a drive that took up most of the third quarter, when the game was scoreless. Falish scored on a one-yard run with 2:45 left in the third quarter, completing a 90-yard drive that took more than nine minutes off of the clock.

Early in the fourth quarter, Falish threw a touchdown pass to Ryan Timler on fourth down and four. The Eskymos took control of the game with a 14-0 lead with 9:52 left.

"Dave did a great job tonight," Hansen said. "I thought he had good command of our offense, and made very good decisions all night."

Hansen also liked what he saw out of Timler.

"He did a great job for us tonight at tight end," Hansen said. "And he's just a sophomore."

Cam Beversluis later had an eight-yard touchdown run for the Eskymos to make it a 21-0 game with 6:10 left in the fourth quarter.

Alpena had two touchdowns called back because of penalties in the game.

The Eskymos will host Traverse City Central in their home opener next Thursday night. Hansen says the earlier start will change the team's practice schedule next week.

"We're going to practice on Sunday," he said. "Sunday is bascially going to be our Monday. We have to continue to get better. There was nothing super glaring wrong tonight, but we've got to keep doing what we've been doing---and do it better."
