Eskymos Top Alma To Win District Championship
ALMA---The Escanaba High School football team won a district championship on Saturday, beating Alma, 14-13, with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Craig Kamin broke off a 50-yard run on the option, and then Christer Carne scored from two yards out with 3:24 left to tie the game. Ethan Silverstone made the clutch extra point to give the Eskymos the lead. The other Escanaba touchdown came in the second quarter, on a 67-yard pass from quarterback Craig Kamin to the team's tallest target, senior Jared Nash. Silverstone also made that extra point kick. Brec Alward scored both of the Panthers' touchdowns, but a missed extra point on the second touchdown turned out to be the difference in the game. The Eskymo defense was big, especially in the second half. Kyle Krutina had an interception with Alma leading, 13-7, early in the fourth quarter. And later in the quarter, the Eskymos forced Alward into a fumble at the 37 yard-line. Escanaba (9-2) gets another crack at Grand Rapids Catholic Central next Saturday at noon, this time in Grand Rapids, and in the Round of Eight. GRCC Beat Escanaba in the state semifinals last fall in Traverse City. |
