NMU Ski Teams Sweep C.C.S.A Championship Titles

HOUGHTON---Both Northern Michigan University Nordic skiing teams earned CCSA championships, combining to sweep the collegiate podium in three of the four events raced at the Tech Trails Saturday and Sunday in the process.

 captured both of the women's individual titles, taking Saturday's 5K classic (17:03.0) and Sunday's 15K freestyle (47:06.2).


On the men's side, Fredrik Schwencke raced to a victory in Saturday's 10K classic (28:22.0) while Zak Ketterson outpaced the collegiate field in Sunday's 20K freestyle (55:11.6).

The women finished with 138 points, 24 more than second-place Michigan Tech. The men totaled 135 points, 16 more than the second-place Huskies.


Nicole Schneider
 (17:03.5) and Vivian Hett (17:17.7) joined Bourne on the podium in the 5K classic. Schneider (47:06.4) and Sophie Schimpl (47:24.8) rounded out the top three in the 15K freestyle.


Ketterson (29:02.1) and Sam Elfstrom (29:13.4) rounded out the top three in the 10K classic. Schwencke placed third in the 20K freestyle (55:20.5).


In the 5K classic, four other Wildcats who competed cracked the top 10: Caroline Brisbois (4th, 17:23.05), Schimpl (5th, 17:23.3), Sophie McDonald (6th, 17:36.4) and Sarah Bezdicek (7th, 17:45.1).

Northern Michigan also placed four other skiers in the 15K freestyle's top 10: Brisbois (4th, 47:35.4), Hett (5th, 47:43.7), McDonald (6th, 48:00.4) and Bezdicek (7th, 49:06.0).


Elfstrom (5th, 56:18.1), Leo Hipp (8th, 57:45.0) and Lars Sonsterud (9th, 57:49.5) made the 20K freestyle's collegiate top 10. Sonsterud (7th, 29:35.6) and Hipp (10th, 30:15.6) also were among the first 10 collegians to cross the line in the 10K classic.


The CCSA Championships included open and collegiate divisions. Bourne won both the overall and collegiate titles. On the men's side, Northern Michigan alumnus Kyle Bratrud outpaced the field in both the 10K classic (27:46.1) and 20K freestyle (52:27.3).
