Braves Open Tennis Season With Loss To Marquette
GLADSTONE---The Gladstone High School girls tennis team opened the 2016 season Thursday with a 5-3 loss to the Marquette Redettes at Pfotenhauer Park. The Braves won three of the four doubles matches, but got swept in the singles matches. Gladstone's Mollie Wiltzius (pictured above in a 2015 match) nearly made the match a 4-4 tie when she won the first set of her #1 singles match against Marquette's Hannah Swajanen, 6-4. But Swajanen rallied to win the next two sets to keep Marquette undefeated in singles play. The other three-set match involved Gladstone's #2 doubles team of Sophia Lippens and Sydney Herioux. The girls went to a tiebreak in each of the first two sets against Marquette's Carley Sundstrom and Kaeleigh Talbach. Lippens and Herioux took the first tiebreak, 7-5, before the Redette girls won the second, 7-1. The Braves won the deciding third set, 6-3.
