U.P. Champion Kingsford Eliminated From States
ADRIAN, Mich.---The Upper Peninsula Zone Five champions were eliminated in two straight games at the Class A American Legion Baseball tournament at Siena Heights University in downstate Adrian. The Kingsford Blues gave up six runs in the first inning on Friday, and lost to Ida, 10-2. That came after the Blues lost to Menominee, 7-5, in extra innings, on Thursday. But things fell apart from there as Harrington gave up six runs in the bottom of the inning. Ida's designated hitter, Nolen Adams, had three hits in four at-bats, and third baseman Nate Bauman had two hits and two runs batted in. Kingsford's other run came in the third inning with an RBI sacrifice fly by Brock Grenier. Grenier, Kingsford's top pitcher all season long, did not throw a pitch in the state tournament, as the Blues tried to "save" Grenier for a possible meeting with Escanaba. The Cubs had not hit Grenier in two regular season meetings, but that match-up never materialized. On Friday, Harrington allowed twelve hits and ten runs, seven of them earned.
