Eskymos End Hockey Regular Season With 8-3 Win
WELLS---Seven different players scored goals as the Escanaba Eskymos fired 57 shots on goal and closed the regular season an 8-3 win over the Negaunee Miners Thursday night in Wells. It was a make-game from one that was snowed out earlier this month. "Negaunee put some pressure on us and I thought we came out a little flat at times," Eskymo Coach Matt Hughes said. "The boys ralliede around each other. They put some pucks in the net. We did some good things. We did some things that we need to fine-tune before Tuesday (regional playoff game against Marquette)." "We put over 50 shots on him, and even though he's tiny, he played his butt off," Escanaba Captain Calvin Pinar said of Corwin. "We had to come out and play strong, and play it like a playoff game even though it wasn't the greatest of competition." Pinar had two goals and an assist to lead the Escanaba offense. Chris LeMire and Jack Williams each had a goal and two assists. Dylan Gauthier, Gavin Schwalbach, Hunter LaMarch, and Kyle Egner also scored for Escanaba. It was a special goal for Egner: his first-ever varsity goal in an Eskymo uniform. "It felt good to get my first one," Egner said. "Dyl (Gauthier) passed it to Jack (Williams) around the net. Jack passed it to me and I just had my head up and shot it. I think it went off a leg, too. I'll take it!" Escanaba led 3-1 after the first period, then put it away with four goals in the second. Wyatt Thull, Neal Violetta, and Anthony Hammemaster scored for Negaunee, which fell to 4-20-0. They will open the regionals at home next Tuesday against Kingsford. Escanaba closed the regular season with a 15-6-4 record. The Eskymos will host Marquette in the regional quarterfinals next Tuesday. Game time in Wells is 7:00. It will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and rrnsports.com.
