'Golden K' Cross-Country Meet Draws 14 Schools
FLAT ROCK---The only home meet of the season for the Escanaba High School cross-country teams was held on Thursday. The "Golden K" event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, and drew teams from 14 different high schools.

The tournament is usually held in Ludington Park, but this year, it was held at the Beauchamp Farm in Flat Rock, because that is where the U.P. Finals will be held.

The 14 schools were divided into "large school" and "small school" categories of seven schools each. There were also junior varsity and middle school races.

In the large school bracket, Sault Ste. Marie won the team championships in both the boys and girls. Escanaba was second in the boys meet, and Calumet was second for the girls. Escanaba's Joey Wolfe (16:56) won the boys meet, with Kingsford's Nate Carey (17:23) second. Calumet's Leah Kilunen (20:14) won the girls meet, while Gladstone's Leigha Woelffer (20:43) was second and Kingsford's Peyton Johnson was third (20:48).

In the small school bracket, Chassell was the narrow winner in both the boys and girls meets. For the boys, the Panthers edged North Central by one point (50-51).

For the girls, Chassell and Munising were tied for first with 40 points. Chassell won the tiebreaker. For the boys, Munising's Brett Hannah was the overall winner, finishing in 17 minutes, 26 seconds. Chassell's Abe Gockenbach was second in 17:37.
