Houghton Wins D1 Golf Titles; Esky Finishes Strong

IRON MOUNTAIN---The Houghton Gremlins won both the boys and girls MHSAA Division One golf Upper Peninsula championships Thursday in Iron Mountain.

In the boys tournament, the Gremlins cruised to the championship with 325 strokes. Marquette was second with 340, Escanaba third with 342, and Gladstone was fourth with 343. Negaunee took fifth place (345) and Kingsford was sixth with 350 strokes.

Houghton's Gunner Stein was the medalist at the Pine Grove Country Club, shooting a 76. Gremlin teammate Brendan Longhini was the runner-up with a 79. Negaunee's Erik Voskuhl finished third with an 80.

Escanaba's Dylan Gauthier and Gladstone's Kyle Pouliot shared fourth place by shooting 81's. Negaunee's Carter Mason shot an 82 for sixth place.

Escanaba's golfers: Gauthier (81), Nick Aird (86), Jonny Kositzky (86), Chris LeMire (92). Gladstone's golfers: Pouliot (81), Adam Scheeneman (85), Max Strasse (86), Bryce Douglas (91).

Kingsford's Marcus Andrews shot an 85, and Marquette's Brett Specker had an 84.

In Thursday's D-1 girls meet, Houghton won with 416 strokes. Marquette was second with 436, and Escanaba was third with 438. Calumet was a distant fourth with 510, and Menominee was fifth wth 515 strokes. Gladstone was seventh with 567 strokes.

The medalist was Houghton's Kaaren Liston, who shot a 90. Marquette's Sidney Higgins was second with a 95. Sault Ste. Marie's Abby Roque finished third with a 103. Esky's Sara Carlson was fourth with a 104, and Marquette's Ellie Hicks was fifth with a 105.

Escanaba's golfers: Carlson (104), Emily Hossele and Megan Dagenais (111), and Sam Henderson (112). Gladstone's top golfer was Erin Quinn with a 134.
