Schwartz, Rapid River Win Softball Tourney Opener

NEWBERRY---The Rapid River High School girls softball team rolled to a 13-0 win over the Pickford Panthers in Division Four district tournament action Tuesday in Newberry.

Superior Central, Newberry, Gwinn, and Cheboygan also posted softball wins Tuesday.

For Rapid River, Erika Schwartz threw her third straight perfect game in the pitcher's circle. Rachel LaCosse hit her first-ever varsity home run. It was a three-run shot in the second inning that gave the Rockets a 4-0 lead.

Also on Tuesday, Superior Central edged Brimley, 7-5, and Newberry topped Rudyard, 3-1. This seven-team district is now down to its final four, and the tournament schedule has changed because of the weather forecast. The finals will now be held on Thursday.

Rapid River will play Munising at 1:00 Thursday, instead of Friday. Superior Central will face Newberry at 3:00, and then the district final will be held at 5:00.

In Marquette County, Westwood ripped Gwinn, 16-1. And in Escanaba, Cheboygan topped Kingsford, 12-3.
