Michigan Tech's Pearson Named Coach of The Year

PRINCETON, N.J. – Michigan Tech's Mel Pearson has been named the 2014-15 College Hockey News Coach of the Year. In his fourth season at his alma mater, Pearson led the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 34 years.

The Huskies finished 29-10-2 in 2014-15 and tied for the third most wins in school history.

The season started with a 10-0 record, the best during the program's 94th season. Tech finished one point behind Minnesota State in the race for the MacNaughton Cup and second to the Mavericks in the WCHA Tournament.

The Huskies were near the tops in the nation in both offense and defense all season long. They were ranked No. 1 on Nov. 17 after entering the polls on Oct. 27 and were in the top 11 for the final 20 weeks.

Pearson's 72 wins are second all-time at Michigan Tech behind John MacInnes (555-295-39). His overall record is 72-68-17. Pearson was named WCHA Coach of the Year in 2011-12 and his 72 wins are the most by a Husky coach in the first four years on the job.

Tech won 15 more games than 2013-14 (14-19-7), matching Boston University for the biggest one-season turnarounds in the country.

The Huskies won 16 games in Pearson's first season, up from a total of 15 games in the three previous years combined. They then won 13 and 14, the latter coming in the first year of the new-look WCHA, before finally breaking through this season.
