Norway's Cinderella Run Ends In State Quarterfinal

TRAVERSE CITY---It was the end of the line for the Norway High School baseball team Tuesday at the Division Four State Quarterfinals in Traverse City.

The Knights fell to Maple City Glen Lake, 5-2, ending a season that started slowly but ended with the team on a nice postseason run.

"We finally got outside," Norway Coach Tony Adams said, explaining his team's late-season success. "We lost 22 games to the weather. We needed to finally play some games, and the kids got more reps, and right now, we're playing our best baseball."

At one point back in April, the Knights played just one game in two weeks. But they pulled together to win a district championship in Ironwood, and a regional title in Rogers City.

On Tuesday, Mike Faull got the call on the mound. He fell behind, 2-0, in the first inning. But Faull settled down, and the Knights managed to tie the game in the second inning when the Lakers made two errors and Garrett Bonetti got a two-run single.

Unfortunately for Norway, that was the only base hit they'd get off of Laker pitcher Thomas Waning, who has committed to play at NCAA-I Xavier University (Ohio).

Maple City scored two runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead, and never looked back from there. The Lakers advance to the state semifinals for a second straight year.
