Eichhorn, Stenberg Win U.P. Golf Championships
ESCANABA---Two local high school golfers took home the top prize as the MHSAA Division Three Upper Peninsula Finals were held at the Highland Golf Course, and at the Escanaba Country Club, on a warm, sunny, Thursday afternoon.

In the boys finals, Painesdale-Jeffers won the team championship with 314 strokes. Cedarville was second with 316 strokes, and Carney-Nadeau was third with 337.

Individually, Carney-Nadeau freshman Hunter Eichhorn was the medalist. He shot a 71, which was equalled by Cedarville's Sam Eberts. Eichhorn won on the tiebreaking playoff hole. Last year, Eichhorn finished second as an eighth-grader and Eberts was third.

In the girls finals, Bark River-Harris won its first U.P. championship in almost four generations. The Broncos finished with 415 strokes, with Crystal Falls Forest Park second with 441, and Ontonagon a distant third with 464 strokes.

BR-H senior Savanna Stenberg was the medalist, but it wasn't easy. She shot a 91, but DeTour freshman Madison Wilkie equalled that 91 score. On the playoff hole, it took five strokes before Stenberg emerged with the championship.

BR-H sophomore Hannah Starnes shot a 94 and was third. Mid Peninsula's Hunter Branstrom shot a 95 and finished fourth. Cedarville's Anna Eberts was fifth with a 97.

DIVISION TWO---Hancock won the boys MHSAA U.P. championship in Iron River on Thursday with 327 strokes. Norway and L'Anse were tied for second with 346. In the girls match, only two schools had enough golfers to field full teams. Iron Mountain won the championship with 444 strokes. Westwood was runners-up with 482 strokes.
