Finlandia University To Add Football Program In '15

HANCOCK---Finlandia University announced Thursday that it will add a varsity football program for the 2015 fall season, competing in NCAA Division III.

The university will also add tennis, wrestling, men's and women's lacrosse, nordic skiing, and men's volleyball. The move is expected to boost Finlandia's enrollment by at least 217 students, and give more U.P. high school graduates a chance to play college sports.

The first new team to compete will be tennis, in the upcoming 2014-15 school year.

The university will start recruiting football players for a program that will play its first football game in the fall of 2015. Also in the 2015-16 school year, nordic skiing will be added. In 2016-17, wrestling will be added. In 2017-18, womens lacrosse will begin competing. In 2018-19, it will be men's lacrosse. And in 2019-20, men's volleyball.

"I am convinced that growing our NCAA Division III programs reaps benefits for all our students, our entire Campus community," Finlandia President Phillip Johnson said. "It is good for all of Finlandia. It is good for the Copper Country. It is good for the Upper Peninsula. So let's do some good."

Foootball will be by far the biggest undertaking for Finlandia, with a target of 75 football players to be recruited over the next two years. The first step is to hire a head coach, and the university is already taking applications and resumes from potential candidates.
