The Gladstone Braves turned back the Rapid River Rockets, 9-3, in the championship game of the eight-team Boyne City Invitational on Saturday. Earlier, the Braves beat Cheboygan, 12-4 and beat the host Boyne City team, 6-2. Before playing Gladstone, Rapid River whipped Gaylord, 17-0, and edged Rochester Adams, 3-2, to make the final. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, the Escanaba Eskymos went 1-2 in the Ashwaubenon Invitational. Escanaba topped the host Jaguars, 4-1, in the opener. But the girls dropped the next two games, losing to Chippewa Falls, 9-3, and Kimberly, 7-1.
The Escanaba High School softball team split a doubleheader with the Alpena Wildcats Friday evening at Lemmerand Park. The Eskymos won the opener behind the pitching of Codi Jenshak, 1-0, before dropping the nightcap, 8-5 (in eight innings).

The Escanaba High School baseball team arrived by charter bus in Saginaw on Friday in preparation for their appearance in Saturday's Baseball Showcase at Saginaw Heritage High School. The Escanaba Eskymos managed just four base hits against three Negaunee pitchers, but used their speed and a couple of Miners errors to post a 6-5 win Thursday night at Al Ness Field. The Eskymos scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after the Miners scored a run in the top of the inning to break a 4-4 tie.

The Escanaba High School tennis team picked up its first win of the 2012 season on Thursday, turning back the Menominee Maroons, 8-0. The win came under sunny conditions, but there was a cold, gusty wind that made it very difficult to return the ball...or to serve...effectively.

The Rapid River Rockets softball team swept a doubleheader from the Superior Central Cougars on Wednesday, winning by scores of 8-1 and 11-1. Neena Brockway and Heather Sanderson earned the pitching victories in the circle. The Rockets improved to 9-0.

The Escanaba High School softball team played for the first time in two weeks on Tuesday, and the Eskymos turned in a good performance in sweeping a doubleheader from the Negaunee Miners. The Eskymos won the opening game, 4-0, as Codi Jenshak pitched the whole game and Bre Belanger had the winning hit in the fifth inning. The Eskymos also won the nightcap, 10-2, after scoring five runs in the first inning to get the upperhand.

The Manistique and Big Bay de Noc School Boards have approved having a co-op football program this fall. The decisions came at special meetings on Monday so that the schools could meet the Michigan High School Athletic Association's deadline for notification. The vote in Manistique was 4-3; it was 7-0 in Big Bay.
The Escanaba High School tennis team opened the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday with a tough battle against the West Iron County Wykons. Tyler Myrick won a tough battle at #2 singles, and the Eskymos' #3 and #4 doubles teams earned victories, but the Wykons won the team score, 5-3. The Escanaba Eskymos and Stephenson Eagles met for the first time ever in high school baseball Tuesday night, and there was a mixture of good and bad in the match-up. The good: almost every kid on both rosters got into the game. The bad: 12 errors and 13 walks. In the end, the Eskymos scored 11 runs in the final three innings to post a 14-4 win over the Eagles at Al Ness Field.

Marquette won both the boys and girls track meets on Tuesday at the Escanaba High School Track. In the girls meet, Marquette was first with 79 points. Escanaba was second with 50, and Menominee was third with 35. In the boys meet, Marquette edged Menominee, 67-66, with Escanaba third at 38 points.

The Gladsone High School boys tennis team opened the 2012 season with a 6-2 win over the Gwinn Model Towners Monday afternoon at Pfotenhauer Park. The Braves won three singles and three doubles matches to secure the win under chilly, windy conditions.

The Escanaba High School boys golf team opened the 2012 season on Monday placing first in the eight-team Gladstone Invitational. The Eskymos had 317 strokes, five better than second-place Marquette. Menominee was third with 335 strokes.
Manistique's Mike Nagy and Nick LaFave were the medalists in the scramble format, shooting a 71. Escanaba's Kevin Gendron and Phil LaMarch were second with 73's. Gladstone's Drew Scheeneman and Jake Peterson were tied for second with 73's.
The Escanaba Eskymos lost both ends of their baseball doubleheader on Saturday, falling to the Appleton North Lightning, 7-3 and 12-1, in the Fox Valley.
Jeff Lyle and Tyler Skufca had run-scoring hits to give the Eskymos the lead in the opener, but the Lightning, featuring two Wisconsin All-State players in its lineup, smacked ten hits and pulled away late in the game. In the nightcap, Escanaba managed only one base hit and was mercied in five innings.
The Gladstone High School track and field teams swept the Kingsford Flivvers in a dual meet Thursday afternoon at the Marble Athletic Field. The Gladstone boys won, 92-45, and the Braves' girls won, 84-53.
In the boys meet, Justin Pederson won the 100, high jump, long jump, and was part of a relay win. Jared Vuksan won the shot put and discus, Kyle Arvan won the 1600 and 3200, Jason Thompson won the pole vault, and Ian Houle won the 300 hurdles.
In the girls meet, Jenna Leisner won the 100 dash, 300 hurdles, and was part of a first place relay team. Jessica Young won the shot put and discus.
Most of the Upper Peninsula's "small school" track and field teams took part in a meet at the Superior Dome Thursday afternoon. In the girls event, Superior Central was first with 91 points. Bark River-Harris was second with 61, Pickford took third with 44, Forest Park was fourth with 43 points, and Ontonagon took fifth place with 41 points. In the boys event, Pickford won with 76 points. Rapid River was second with 72, Forest Park took third with 63 points. Bark River-Harris and Munising tied for fourth with 61. It was a raw, nasty evening at Al Ness Field as cold winds and heavy rain converged on the area Thursday night. But the Eskymos fought through the conditions, and a tiny strike zone, to beat the Kingsford American Legion Blues, 14-7. David Falish and Nick Vandermissen both had three base hits for the Eskymos, and Vandermissen scored four runs. Andrew Sedlar pitched four innings in relief to earn the mound victory.
There have been several attempts over the years to have a high school varsity baseball program in Gladstone. But some in community are planning a new effort to ask the Gladstone School Board to allow for a Braves baseball program. A meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 25th, at the Gladstone Legion Hall, where all kids interested in high school baseball are being asked to show up. The annual "Meet The Eskymos" event was held Wednesday night at the Escanaba High School Commons. The Escanaba High School baseball team turned up the heat Tuesday as they faced the Norway Knights on a cold evening at Al Ness Field. The Eskymos scored eleven runs in the first inning and rolled to a 17-0 win over the Knights in a game shortened to four and a half innings by the mercy rule.
It was Escanaba's second lopsided win over the Knights in the past seven days. The Eskymos won in Norway, 13-0, last Wednesday. The Escanaba High School boys track team took sixth place out of eight teams, and the Eskymo girls took fourth out of nine teams at the Division One Track and Field Meet Tuesday at the Superior Dome. The Esky boys had 31 points, far behind meet champion Menominee with 91 points. Marquette was second and Houghton third. In the girls meet, Escanaba had 53.25 points. Marquette won with 84 points. The Manistique Emeralds varsity softball team welcomed two guests to the Emerald City on Monday for a softball doubleheader: the Escanaba JV Eskymos, and Old Man Winter. The teams played softball under snowy, windy conditions, with the JV Eskymos getting a big first inning to top Manistique, 13-7. The second game was cancelled.
"It was terrible," Manistique Coach Dave McNeil said. "Big winds, big snowflakes. And I'll tell you what. There's a huge advantage to getting big runs in the first inning when it's 28-degree weather! We played even with them after that, but that first inning was big."

The Gladstone Braves softball team won three games at the Pinconning Invitational in Lower Michigan on Saturday to bring the tournament trophy back across the Mackinac Bridge. The Braves beat Reese, 12-2, then downed the host Spartans, 18-2.
Gladstone shut out Fenton, 2-0, in a very competitive game in which the Braves got just one base hit and the Tigers managed two hits. The Braves scored their runs in the third inning on a walk, a pair of bunts, and aggressive baserunning. Gladstone improved to 4-2-1 on the season.
The Escanaba Eskymo Boys Tennis team opened its season on Saturday at the Kaukauna Invitational in Wisconsin. But the team traveled with mostly freshmen and sophomores because 22 of the team's 40 players were gone....either at the Junior/Senior Prom, or taking ACT College Exams. The Escanaba High School baseball team had its four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Shawano (Wis.) Hawks beat the Eskymos, 7-1, at Al Ness Field. The Hawks broke open a close game by scoring four runs in the fourth inning. Escanaba committed five errors in the game, and also walked six batters and hit two others.

The Northern Michigan University Intercollegiate Athletics Department announced the recipients of the Athlete of the Year and the Gildo Canale Senior Awards at the Hall of Fame and Student-Athlete Awards Banquet on Saturday. Named Athlete of the Year were Chelsea Lyons and Erik Soderman. Bailey Franklin and Justin Florek were selected as the recipients of the Gildo Canale Senior Award. David Falish came within two outs of getting a no-hitter in the opener, settling for a two-hitter with nine strikeouts. Devin Olsen won his Eskymo pitching debut in the nightcap, allowing two runs over four innings.
