Johnson Scores Early And Often As Eskymos Win In Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY---The Escanaba High School hockey team got a monster performance from co-captain Graham Johnson on Friday, and overwhelmed the Traverse City Central Trojans, 5-0, at the Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City.

Johnson scored the team's first four goals, including one just eight seconds into the game and another with 14 seconds left in the first period to help the Eskymos improve to 3-2-0 on the season.

Johnson also scored a shorthanded goal in the third period, before freshman Hank Sholten finished the scoring midway through the third period. Ben Sands had two assists, while Nolan Bink, Owen LaBonte, Griffin Johnson, and Jacob Freel added solo apples.

Escanaba, ranked eighth in the state in Division Three in the latest hockey coaches poll, bounced back from Tuesday's loss at seventh-ranked Painesdale-Jeffers.

The Eskymos will face second-ranked Riverview Gabriel Richard Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers are 4-0-1 after they tied Muskegon Reeths Puffer, 2-2, on Friday. The Escanaba-Gabriel Richard game is set to start at 12:45 on Saturday.
