MARQUETTE---Marquette will play host to the Michigan Class A State Tournament for the second time in four years this weekend, as six teams from across the state compete in a double-elimination tournament.
The event begins Wednesday night with a banquet at Lakeview Arena, with Opening Ceremonies set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Haley Field.
The Post 44 Blues Legion team is playing host, with the Upper Peninsula Zone Five Champion Gladstone Indians being the other team from north of the Bridge.
Marquette last played host in 2021, after the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled what was supposed to be the Blues' turn to host. The 2022 state tournament was in the Detroit suburb of Trenton, with Gladstone playing host in 2023. This is the third time in four years that the Upper Peninsula has hosted the Class A state tournament.
The two-time defending state champion Trenton Steel will not compete in this tournament. The four downstate teams are Gaylord, Breckenridge, Hudson, and a newcomer: Three Oaks.
The Radio Results Network will provide extensive coverage of the tournament, with live broadcasts of every game involving the two U.P. teams on FM-100.3 The Point in Marquette, NewsTalk FM-93.5/AM-600 in Gladstone, and at www.rrnsports.com.
The state championship game on Saturday at 1:00 will also be broadcast across the Upper Peninsula, regardless of the teams involved. Same if a "second" title game is needed Sunday.
