![]() Carson Chartier threw 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball against Copper Country and the Vikings grabbed a 6-0 lead, but then had to hang on at the end when walks, an error, and one run-scoring double plated four runs in the final inning for the Flames.
Then in the game against Niagara, the Vikings were handcuffed by pitcher Jesse Sampson (North Central High School), but put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Evan Haferkorn's two-run single gave Norway its second straight walk-off win over Niagara (and over Sampson), after Nolan Amundson had the walk-off base hit in a tournament in Niagara the previous weekend.
In the first two games on Saturday, the young Kingsford Greens Junior Legion team lost to Niagara, 15-0, and lost to Copper Country, 14-3.
Norway took advantage of a young Flames catcher in the top of the first inning by literally stealing home plate twice, a rarity for any level of baseball. The first was Nolan Amundson, and the second, moments later, was Cameron Varda.
Chartier had the no-hitter going after he walked the two men he faced in the first inning, but he retired the next 15 batters he faced, nine of them on strikes. It was a 3-0 game until the top of the sixth inning, when Alex Ortman smacked a two-run double to the outfield fence. He was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple, but it was 6-0.
![]() In the bottom of the inning, Chartier was closing in on his first-ever full-game no-hitter when he gave up a solid run-scoring double to Kade Farrell. That broke up the no-hitter and the shutout on one swing of the bat. But things got interesting when Chartier issued a walk, a throwing error scored a run, and a wild pitch scored another.
Chartier was lifted for Isaac Lorenzoni, who struck out the two men he faced to save the victory for the Vikings.
The Norway-Niagara game was intense as always, as Jesse Sampson and Carson McLean hooked up in a pitcher's duel.
Norway played some small ball in the bottom of the third inning when Haferkorn doubled to start the inning and Brett Lagina and Ortman both executed bunt singles.
Niagara, though, rallied for three runs against McLean in the fifth inning. Ross Shampo, Ryan Erickson, and Sampson had back-to-back-to-back hits to load the bases, and Ortman came in to relieve McLean. Ortman got a called third strike on Eddie Swanson, but he walked Christian Hedmark on a 3-2 pitch to force home a run.
![]() It looked like the inning would be over when Ortman coaxed Blake Holmes to hit a ground ball to Chartier at second base. Chartier misplayed it, and two runs scored, giving Niagara a 3-2 lead.
But in the bottom of the seventh, McLean started the inning with a solid base hit.
The tournament continues on Sunday with Norway facing the Kingsford juniors, and Copper Country taking on Niagara in the morning session ![]() |
