Gladstone Loses Heartbreaker In District Semifinal

KINGSFORD---It's hard to beat a team three times in the same season.

You've pr0bably heard that statement made so many times over the years that it has become a cliche. But on Monday night in Kingsford, the Gladstone Braves found out the hard way that this statement is not a cliche.

The Braves missed seven of their eight free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and the Menominee Maroons pulled out a 47-46 Class B District Semifinal win.

Gladstone's Sadie Strasser on the drive.
"I thought we had some oppirtunities at the foul line and some put-backs that we didn't convert," Gladstone Coach Karl Dollhopf said. "The girls fought hard, and it went right down to the wire."

Gladstone had defeated Menominee, 49-39, on Jan. 31 in Gladstone. And the Braves beat the Maroons in triple overtime, 49-47, on Feb. 9 in Menominee. But not this time.

The game was tied at 44-44 entering the final minute, when Menominee's Taylor Roman sank two free throws to put her team in front. After Tinner Sharon missed a shot on the baseline, the Maroons got the ball, but Amanda Pederson missed two free throws.

So, it was still a 46-44 game. The Braves tried a baseline bounce pass, and it was picked off by Menominee's Karli Barley. She got fouled by Callie Jensen and made one free throw, so it was a 47-44 Maroons lead.

Menominee's Amanda Pederson scores.
After a jump ball tie-up, the Braves had one last chance. But they did not get a three. Jess Beaudry got the inbounds play and scored two inside the paint with four seconds left.

The problem for the Braves is that they had no time outs left. The Maroons did not have to make an inbounds pass in under five seconds, and so Menominee won.

"I don't think that's a bad score, getting that put-back," Dollhopf said. "But they (Menominee) made a smart move not inbounding it. Yeah, we would have liked an attempt at a 'three' there, but at that point, we had had our opportunities at three's and they didn't go. That's just the type of game that it was."

Gladstone's Callie Jensen scores on fast break.
Earlier, Gladstone had built a 16-10 lead in the second quarter before going on a dry spell. The Maroons took advantage with an 8-0 run to get the lead.

Menominee had a strong start early in the third quarter as Alexys Christian scored twice. That gave the Maroons a 29-24 lead, but Gladstone scored seven straight points (five of them by Alexis St. Cyr) and the Braves had a 31-29 lead.

Gladstone's only senior, Alison Austin.
The score stayed closed down the stretch before the Maroons made just enough free throws to win the game.

"We struggled at the line," Dollhopf said. "But the key was, we wanted to get there. And be the aggressor. We accomplished that. It was just a matter of finishing it."

Amanda Pederson scored 17 points to lead the Maroons. Christian scored 11 points and Roman added ten. Sharon had 13 points and Beaudry added 10 for Gladstone.

Gladstone, with just one senior (Alison Austin) finished with a 10-11 record. The Maroons improved to 10-10 and will play Kingsford for the district championship.
