Big Second Half Sends Kingsford Girls Past Braves
GLADSTONE---For the first 16 minutes of Wednesday night's Gladstone-Kingsford girls basketball game, Braves Coach Karl Dollhopf couldn't have been happier. His team was playing strong defense, his only senior was scoring points on Senior Night, and the crowd was having a good time cheering (especially the Braves student section). Gladstone led the Flivvers, 25-16, and the Kingsford girls were clearly frustrated. The Flivvers even threw up several airballs from long range, igniting the Gladstone fans. The Flivvers ramped up their defensive effort, beating the young Braves line-up with a suffocating full-court press. The trap forced numerous turnovers, and combined with the Flivver dominance on the offensive glass, the momentum quickly changed. And the main pain in Gladstone's back was Flivver senior Andrea Roell. She had just four points at halftime, but she poured in 23 second half points to lead the Kingsford rally. Roell scored eight of her team's 14 points that turned 25-16 Gladstone lead into a 30-27 Kingsford advantage midway through the third quarter. The Braves closed to within 39-37 early in the fourth quarter, but Roell and the Flivvers went on another 10-1 run. That gave Kingsford a 49-38 lead, its biggest of the night. It was a 20-point turnaround after the Braves had that halftime cushion. In the fourth quarter, the Braves got to within 54-48, and had a chance to get closer when Alex St. Cyr barely missed a three. From there, Gladstone was in foul trouble, and the Flivvers drained 12 of 16 foul shots to put the game away. Roell had eight of those free throws down the stretch, and the Flivvers ended up making 16 of its final 22 foul shots. Kingsford had been 0-for-7 from the line in the first half. Alison Austin led the Braves with 14 points. She is the only senior on the Gladstone team this season, and she was honored during a pre-game ceremony complete with flowers and photos. Gladstone is now 10-9 on the season. The Braves close the regular season Thursday night in Iron Mountain, and then open the MHSAA Class B District Tournament next Monday in Kingsford. The Braves' first district opponent is Menominee. Game time is 8:00 (ET) and it will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
