Negaunee Uses Long Ball, Defense To Stop Eskymos

ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School girls basketball team does not give up very many points. In fact, more than halfway through this 2012-'13 season, the girls have only allowed 50 points to two teams.

And nobody has reached 60 points against the Eskymos this season.

Codi Jenshak (4) runs the Escanaba offense as Negaunee's Ashley Veale (22) defends.
But the problem is, the Esky girls just don't score enough points, in the wake of the graduation of leading scorers Olivia Nash and Trista Barron.

The trend continued Wednesday night as the Escanaba Eskymos lost to the Negaunee Miners, 44-33, at the Escanaba Gym.

The Miners, the third-ranked team in the Upper Peninsula, never could shake the Eskymos.

The Escanaba girls made the Miners work all night long, and the difference in the game came in the second quarter when Negaunee hit a couple of three's to build a lead.

Negaunee led, 21-15, at halftime, and then expanded that lead to 11 points in the third quarter. The Eskymos stabilized the game the rest of the way, but the girls could not get the Negaunee lead lower than five points.

Negaunee was led by Ashley Veale's 23 points. The Miners are now 11-1 this season.

Esky's Sydney Gafner attacks the basket.
Escanaba got 20 points and nine boards from Michelle LaFave. She dominated at times in the fourth quarter, but the rest of the Eskymo team combined to score just 13 points.

This was Escanaba's second loss to the Miners this season, with the other loss also coming by 11 points in Negaunee on Dec. 4. The Eskymos (3-9) host Iron Mountain Friday night as the girls' six-game homestand continues.
