ESCANABA----
It's never easy to get blown out in your season-opener, especially for a young team like the Escanaba Eskymos.

But Coach Tracy Hudson and the boys understood that Tuesday's 70-32 loss to Negaunee came to one of the top teams in the state.

David Falish is playing hoops again.
And the boys regrouped for a Great Northern Conference game against the Kingsford Flivvers.

The Eskymos fell behind by nine points late in the second quarter, but rallied to post a 53-51 win to even their season at 1-1.

Brandon Robinette hit two free throws with 17 seconds left to break a 50-50 tie, and then the Eskymos played strong defense in the final seconds to deny the Flivvers overtime.

Escanaba trailed, 19-14, after one quarter, and fell behind 31-22 just before halftime. But sophomore point guard Sam Molnar nailed a three-point basket from half court at the buzzer.

It was only three points, but it excited the Esky boys heading into the locker room.

The game was tight all the way to the final buzzer. After Robinette's free throws, Kingsford's Caleb Harrington made the first free throw, but missed the second. Eskymo senior Dan LaPalm got the rebound, and he split his free thr0ws to make it 53-51.

Jamie Hiltunen looks to pass Friday night.
In the final three seconds, the Flivvers missed their last gasp shot, and the Eskymos celebrated a big victory in the Great Northern Conference.

Ben Kleiman led the Eskymos with 16 points, while Robinette scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Molnar added 12 points.

Aidan Wienke had 14 points to lead the Flivvers.

Escanaba travels to Houghton for a non-coneference game Monday night.
