CARNEY---
The Carney-Nadeau High School boys basketball team started the night by celebrating the success of last year's state semifinal season. Then they went out and served notice that they will be a force to be deat with again in 2012-13.

In a pre-game ceremony, the Wolves unveiled a new banner on the gym wall that shows the team's first-ever regional championship and appearance in the state's Class D Final Four.

Then, the Wolves ripped the Rapid River Rockets, 77-35, in the season-opener.

Carney-Nadeau raced to a 7-0 lead, and led 28-7 early in the second quarter, prompting Rapid River Coach Craig Carter to use three time outs.

The Carney lead grew to 48-18 at the half, and was 64-28 late in the third quarter as the mercy rule took effect.

Carney went 23-3 last season, but were underdogs in nearly every playoff game they played. This year, the Wolves won't sneak up on anybody. They are now the hunted.

On Monday night, Wade Schetter scored a game-high 23 points. Dionte Blahnik, known mostly for his defense last season, scored 19 points Monday. He nailed back-to-back three-pointers in the second quarter. Rapid River was led by Jake Pearson's nine points.

Carney-Nadeau travels to North Dickinson on Thursday. Rapid River has its home opener against North Central, also on Thursday.
