GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Braves and Menominee Maroons battled the snow and cold to play a baseball game on Monday, and the Braves scored two runs in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie to post a 5-3 win at Don Olsen Field. Relief pitcher Braden Sundquist, throwing at times while being pelted by snow and sleet pellets, got a ground out and two strikeouts to preserve the win. The Braves took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Mason LaChance with two out in the opening inning against Menominee starter Austin Mallice. The Braves stranded the bases loaded in the second inning, But in the third inning, the Braves used an error and an RBI infield single by Aedan Creten to take a 3-0 lead. Noah Peterson allowed two hits over four scoreless innings on the mound for the Braves, but on such a cold day, Braves rookie manager Lucas Lacosse decided to go to the bullpen. Braden Sudquist had problems in the fifth inning, allowing three runs on a couple of infield hits (one on a mental mistake on a bunt that landed fair in the batters box), alomg with a walk and a hit battsman. Menominee's Chad Kenney had an infield hit to bring in one run, and Kennison Boivin's groundout tied the game up at 3-3. Creten made a bid for another run with a long drive to right field but he was robbed on a great running catch by Boivin, who sent it back to the infield for a double play. But Sundquist workesd scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, giving up one baserunner in each frame, but striking out the final two batters to earn the win. He also gets a "blown save" and Peterson gets a hard-luck "no decision". Gladstone (2-1) travels to Bark River-Harris for a 4:30 game on Tuesday. The game will be broadcast live on WUPF-FM (Eagle 107.3) and on-line at www.radioresultsnetwork.con. Menominee fell to 0-2 on the season. |
