Rapid River Basketball Holds Off Forest Park 59-50

RAPID RIVER---The Rapid River High School basketball team held off the Forest Park Trojans, 59-50, in boys basketball action Thursday night in Rapid River.

Tyler Sundling had 17 points to lead the Rockets.

Sam Orth added 12 points and Braydon Moss chipped in 11. Forest Park got 19 points from Max Nuylund. Riley Hendrickson chipped in 13 points for the Trojans.

Rapid River led, 34-21, at halftime, and scored the first six points of the third quarter to take a 19-point lead.

The Trojans went on a 10-0 run to get back into the game, and closed the gap to five points in the ofurth quarter before the Rockets closed it out.

Moss had a pair of second half triples to help stop Forest Park runs, and Orth's put back, followed by a Nate Olson lay-up, turned the tide back to the Rockets' favor.

"We told the boys that it's a game of runs," Rapid River Coach Richard Poma said. "We withstood a pretty big run there. That Hendrickson did a really good job of bringing them back. He's a really good point guard. The boys responded when they needed to respond and I'm pretty proud of them."

The win was the second straight for the Rockets after opening the season with three straight losses. That rough start to the basketball season followed Rapid River's improbable state championship run in football last month.

"It takes a little bit ot time," Poma said. "I think they're understanding that chemistr doesn't always carry over from football, so you've kund of got to make your own chemistry as you go along. The longer we get together, the better we're going to play together."

Incidentally, there will be a celebration of the Rockets' football championship Friday afternoon at 2:00 at the school's gym. It is open to the public.
