UP Wrestling Teams Battle At Gaylord Tournament
GAYLORD---For a while there, it looked like there would be no Yoopers competing in the Northern Michigan Wrestling Championships in Gaylord.
The Mackinac Bridge was closed due to falling ice all afternoon and evening Friday, and throughout the overnight hours into Saturday. The Gladstone Braves made it as far as St. Ignace, then had to cancel their hotel rooms in Gaylord. Then, they couldn't find any rooms in St. Ignace and had to drive another hour north to Sault Ste. Marie.
Finally, at 7:30 Saturday morning, the Bridge re-opened. The Braves, Escanaba Eskymos, and Marquette Redmen all made it to Gaylord, and turned in nice performances.
Gladstone finished as runners-up to the powerhouse Gaylord Blue Devils (313-165), while the Redmen finished fourth overall (125 points) and Escanaba was fifth (113 points).
Gladstone's Adam Bruce was the only Yooper to win an individual championship, taking the 130-pound title after pinning Marquette's Griffin Moore and Gaylord's Rico Brown in the final.
Escanaba's Hunter Larson finished runner-up at 140 pounds, and Gladstone's Jared Demeuse was runner-up at 215. Marquette's Joe Lagrou was runner-up at 103.
