Escanaba Builds Early Lead, Holds Off Niagara, 9-4
ESCANABA---The Escanaba Cubs took a 6-0 lead in the third inning on the way to a 9-4 win over Niagara in American Legion Baseball action Monday night at Al Ness Field. The Cubs continued a homestand that began with the annual Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament over the weekend. And on this night, the weather was finally nice. Then moments later, a throw to third base got away and went all the way to the left field fence, scoring two more runs. But Niagara (made up of kids from Norway, North Central, Niagara, and Florence High Schools) came back in the top of the fourth inning against Cubs starting pitcher Johnny Schlenvogt. He didn't allow a hit in the first three innings, but Niagara, got RBI singles from Ben Snyder and Nate Krueger to cut it to 6-2. Then Seth Polfus singled in two more runs. Schlenvogt was able to get out of that jam, then kept Niagara off the board in the next two innings. Sam Hall came on to throw a scoreless seventh inning for the Cubs. Frappier singled in another run in the fifth inning, giving him two hits and three runs batted in on the night. Tyler Willette also had two hits, and Justin Popelka scored twice. Hunter Riley took the loss on the mound for Niagara. Escanaba hosts Bark River in a twinbill Tuesday night at 6:00.
