Bilski's Shooting Leads South All-Stars Past North
MARQUETTE---It was the final high school basketball game for many Upper Peninsula graduating seniors on Saturday as the U.P. All-Star Basketball game was held at Marquette Senior High School. And just as it has been for most of the past several years, it was highlighted by two players from the North Central Jets. Dawson Bilski burned down the nets with 34 points and teammate Jason Whitens added 18 as the South All-Stars turned back the North, 126-116. Bilski, who will attend Michigan Tech University this fall, was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Norway's Justin Bal added 17 points and Iron Mountain's Carson Wonders chipped in 18. For the North team, Negaunee graduate Trent Bell scored 28 points. He will join Bilski at Michigan Tech this fall, while Wonders will play at Northern Michigan University. Bell's Negaunee teammate, Dre Tuominen, scored 22 points for the North. He is a Bay College recruit. Two Eastern U.P. players did well for the North team, as Sault Ste. Marie's Ryley Alaspa scored 20 points and Pickford's Derek Edington chipped in 15 points. NORTH GIRLS PREVAIL---In the girls All-Star game, Newberry's Taylor Bryant had a big first half and led her North team to a 63-50 win over the South. Bryant scored 13 points all told, and was named the game's Most Valuable player. Calumet's Hayley Wickstrom chipped in a dozen points for the North. Escanaba's Jeny Brandt and Munising's Frankie Mattson both scored seven points for the South All-Stars. |
