Rapid River, Gladstone Sweep Away Softball Rivals

The Rapid River Rockets won three games and the Gladstone Braves won four times in softball action on Saturday.  The Rockets took down Calumet twice and Hancock once in the Keweenaw, while the Braves swept through the tournament field at home.

ROCKETS WIN THREE IN HANCOCK
The Rockets started the day with a 5-1 win over Calumet. Brittany Schwartz was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and one walk, striking out six batters along the way. Erica Proehl hit her first varsity home run, and Erica Rubick and Richelle Vandeville both had two base hits. Shelby LaCosse added a two-run double.

Rapid River faced Calumet again moments later, and this time, pounded out a 13-2 victory in six innings. The Rockets brought out the big bats in this one, with Rubick (pictured above) hitting a grand slam home run. Vandeville had a solo home run and two other hits, and Lexi Trombley was four-for-four with a two-run homer and four total RBI. Trombley was also the winning pitcher in that win over the Copper Kings.

The Rockets finished their day with an 11-1 win over Hancock in five innings. Schwartz was back in the circle for this one, and she scattered three hits over five innings, striking out eight batters and walking two. At the plate, she had two hits and drove in two runs. Tina Olsen added two hits and three runs batted in against the Bulldogs.

Rapid River (9-3) returns to action on Monday at home against Negaunee.

GLADSTONE BRAVES SWEEP FOUR AT HOME
The Braves hosted their annual tournament on Saturday, this time, though, to honor the late Gerry Smith, who coached Gladstone to numerous regional championships and two state titles. The Braves trailed the Norway Knights, 5-0, before rolling to a 17-5 win.

The Braves' other results:
Gladstone 6, Negaunee 5
Gladstone 16, Marquette 1
Gladstone 6, Kingsford 0

In other tournament games:
Kingsford 14, Marquette 5
Norway 19, Marquette 4
Norway 9, Negaunee 7
Negaunee 8, Kingsford 7
