Hannahville Boys 'Soar' Over Grand Marais, 59-40
HANNAHVILLE---The Upper Peninsula's smallest high school boys and girls basketball teams gathered in Hannahville on Fiday for the start of the annual Northern Lights League Tournament. Eight boys teams and seven girls teams are taking part. In boys action on Friday, the host Hannahville Soaring Eagles beat the Grand Marais Polar Bears, 59-40, in the quarterfinals. The sixth-seeded Soaring Eagles led, 13-11, after one quarter, and 30-22 at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter. Grand Marais senior Landon Stachnik scored 19 of his team's 22 first half points and ended up with a game-high 27 points. For Hannahville, senior David Welling had 24 points and fellow senior Ira Meshigaud added 14. Eighth grader Joe Larson had ten. Later in the day, Hannahville was eliminated by third-seeded Ojibwe Charter, 51-37. Hannahville's girls are seeded second in their tournament, and they will play their first game Saturday morning at 9:30. The girls championship game is set for 2:30.
