2016 Cross Country Season Ends With U.P. Finals

GLADSTONE---The Michigan High School Athletic Association's Upper Peninsula Cross-Country Finals were held on a crisp Saturday afternoon at the Beauchamp Farm in Flat Rock in Delta County. It was a double championship for Ishpeming in Division Two, while teams from both ends of the U.P. won other championships in the daylong event.

In Division Two, the Ishpeming boys had the top two finishers and won the team title with 29 points. Wakefield-Marenicso took second with 41 points, while Newberry was third (106), Ironwood was fourth (110), and Hancock finished fifth (136). Ishpeming's Grady Kerst took the individual title, finishing in 16 minutes, 24.3 seconds. Fellow Hematite Spencer Giroux was third (16:35.4) and Newberry's Kindred Griffis took third (16:37.3).

In the girls meet, Ishpeming won with 62 points, edging second-place Munising with 70 points. Hancock took third (101), St. Ignace fourth (124), and Newberry was fifth (134 points). Munising had the top two individual finishers, however, with Alyssa Webber winning the race in 19:59. Mustang teammate Madeleine Peramaki was second in 20:32.8, and Wakefield-Marenisco's Lily Wieringa finished third in 20:44.8.

In Division One, the Negaunee boys won the championship wurh 38 points, led by individual champion Colton Yesneym, who finished in 15:49.8. Houghton finished second with 56 points, with Marquette third (92) and Sault Ste. Marie fourth (96).

Marquette's Garrett Rudden was second behind Yesney in 16:25.9, and Houghton's Clayton Sayen took third place in 16:27.4.

In the D-1 girls race, Sault Ste. Marie wrapped up a great season by winning the U.P. championship with 34 points. Usual champion Marquette had to settle for second place with 53 points. Houghton was third (114), Menominee fourth (124), and Gladstone was fifth (137).

Marquette's Becci Mcnamee was the individual champion, finishing in 19:06.4. The Sault's Courtney Arbic was second in 19:33.09, and Negaunee's Emily Paupore was third (19:45.4).

In Division Three, the Chassell Panthers won the boys championship with 54 points, with Brimley taking second (77), Stephenson third (81), Cedarville fourth (126), and North Central fifth (149 points). Brimley's Austin Plotkin won the race in 17:02, while Chassell's Ben Tuomi was second (17:36.1) and Cedarville's Thomas Bohn ended up third in 17:38.5.

In the D-3 girls race, the Cedarville Trojans took top spot, finishing with 34 points. Chassell was second with 46 points, Dollar Bay third (81), Mid Peninsula fourth (88), and Stephenson was fifth (90). Chassell's Leah Rautiola won the race in 20:12.2, Cedarville's Emma Bohn was second (20:27.2), and Dollar Bay's Cami Daavettila was third in 21:14.8.
