Escanaba Athletes Won't Have To Pay Activity Fees
 ESCANABA----Escanaba School Superintendent Michele LeMire announced Tuesday that student-athletes will not have to pay an activity fee this fall after all. She says that the Eskymo Fan Club has approved spending up to $50,000 to help the athletic department meet its expenses for the 2016-17 school year. The Eskymo Band Boosters and Spotlights organization have also announced donations to make sure that students involved in other extracurricular activities outside of sports also don't have to "pay to p;ay". LeMire says the groups have also announced enough financial support to make sure that transportation costs are covered...so students and families will not have to either pay to ride to away games, or find their own way to those contests. As a budget-balancing move, the district announced back in the spring that it would implement an activity fee for district-funded athletics, jazz band, and the high school musical. Athletic transportation would have been co-funded, with the district picking up some of the cost, and the teams fundraising for the rest. "Thanks to the efforts of these wonderful organizations--the activity fees and partial self-funding of athletic transportation will not have to happen," LeMire said. "We hope we can take this year to work together as a larger community to figure things out for the future," Fan Club President Linda Beauchamp said. Besides the $50,000 from the Fan Club, the Band Boosters and Spotlights have offered financial support, but have not announced a specific amount. |
