Mid County Mavericks Get First Legion Victory, 5-1

GLADSTONE---The Mid County Mavericks picked up the first win of the season for their revived Senior American Legion Baseball program Monday, beating the Gladstone Junior Indians, 5-1, at Don Olsen Field.

Mid County has had American Legion Baseball programs in the past, but in recent years, they've had either no team at all, or a junior Legion team, in Central Menominee County.

Now, with boys from Stephenson and Wausaukee (Wis.) High Schools, as well as from the Carney-Nadeau district, the Mavericks are off and running for the 2016 season, despite a season-opening 10-0 loss to the Menominee Red Wave last weekend.

"We played Menominee and that didn't go as well as we planned," Mavericks pitcher Bryce Tharp said. "We're going to stick with it and hopefully get a better season going."

The team plays its home games in Daggett, and the community is fired up about it.

"I think it will be good," Mavericks shortstop Nate Rasner said. "It'll bring us together. Hopefully, they'll back us all season here. Hope we can win some games for them. I think they're looking forward to it."

The Mavericks got off to a good start on that during Monday's game in Gladstone, as Tharp threw six innings of no-hit ball. But as Tharp reached the 100-pitch mark, he was lifted from the mound and Brett Zeutizus took over. The Junior Indians broke up the no-hitter with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solid single by Tevin Wells.

The only run against Tharp came in the first inning when he walked three batters and the run came in on an error. It was quite an outing for Tharp, who had major knee surgery earlier this year and missed the entire Stephenson Eagles baseball season.

Jesus Bucera had an RBI single in the first inning for Mid County. Rasner brought home Alex Hanson with a hit in the fourth inning.

Two other runs scored on wild pitches, and a third came home when the throw back to the pitcher got away.

Gladstone used three pitchers. Carson Shea threw the first three innings and took the loss. Jared Crow tossed the middle three innings. Ian Schwalbach threw the seventh inning for the Junior Indians, who travel to Bark River-Harris on Tuesday.

Mid County will face the defending state champion Marquette Blues on Wednesday.
