ORANGE CRUSH: Eskymos Win GNC Golf Trophy

ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School golf teams added Great Northern Conference championships to their hardware on Thursday, with their sights set on next week's U.P. Finals. The Eskymo boys beat Gladstone by 11 strokes while the Eskymo girls topped the Braves, and everybody else, by a wide margin, at the Escanaba Country Club.

And while it was a dominating performance for Coach Brian Robinette's team on their home course, there was plenty of drama at the top of the boys' leaderboard. Three boys finished tied for first with 76's: Escanaba's Dylan Gauthier and Johnny Kositzky, and Gladstone's Kyle Pouliot. Kositzky ended up winning medalist honors in a playoff.

Escanaba had four of the top five finishers, with Nick Aird and Nathan Rouseau finishing tied for fourth place with 77's. Gladstone freshman Rudy Peterson shot a 79 and finished sixth, and Kingsford's Dylan Dalsanto took seveth spot by carding an 80.

Gladstone had two more boys in the Top Ten as Bryce Douglas and Adam Scheeneman both shot 81's. Kingsford's Joe Linn was tied with the two Braves with an 81.

Escanaba won the GNC trophy with 306 strokes. Gladstone was second with 317. Kingsford took third (332), Marquette fourth (357), and Menominee (362) fifth.

For the girls, Escanaba was even more dominant, taking five of the top six scores. The Eskymos were again led by freshman Paxton Johnson, who won medalist honors by carding an 85. Eskymo teammate Megan Dagenais was second with an 88, and teammate Sam Henderson finished third with a 94. Marquette's Ellie Hicks was fourth (97).

Escanaba's Emily Hossele also broke the 100 mark, finishing fifth with a 98. Eskymo Kaitlin Cole was sixth with a 100. Gladstone's top golfer was Sophia Lippens with a 105, good for seventh place. Ashley Edwardsen and Erin Quinn shot 107's for the Braves.

As a team, the Eskymos finished with 365 strokes, nearly 80 strokes clear of second-place Gladstone (444). Kingsford finished third with 496, and Menominee's 507 was good enough for fourth. Marquette did not have enough girls for a team score.

The Eskymos...and Braves...will try to win the Upper Peninsula championship next week in West Ishpeming. The boys will face a tough challenge from Negaunee, while the girls will likely be locked in a battle with Houghton.
