Forest Park Starts Fast; Fall In 'D' Semifinal Match

BATTLE CREEK---The Forest Park Trojans won the first set in their Class D state semifinal match against the Leland Comets Thursday in Battle Creek. But Leland won the next three sets...two of them with extra points...to eliminate the Trojans, 3-1.

Forest Park came out strong in the first set, winning, 25-23. And the Trojans had a chance to fo up by two sets when they had a 24-23 lead. But they couldn't get that pivitol point, and the Comets rallied to win that second set, 27-25.

In the third set, Leland (48-7-4) rolled to a 25-18 win, putting the Trojans on their heels. The fourth set also went right to the wire, with Leland pulling it out, 28-26.

Michaela Steiro led the Trojans with 18 kills, while Libby Shamion had 12 kills and 14 digs. Hannah Bortolini contributed 20 digs, Maria Stankewicz had 11 digs, and Abby Nylund was credited with 13 digs.

For Leland, Maddie Trumbull led the way with 15 kills and 14 digs, while Allie Martin had 11 kills and 14 digs. Leland faces Battle Creek St. Phillip in Saturday's state final match.

Forest Park ends a successful season with a 39-2-3 record.
