MARQUETTE--- Northern Michigan University (14-14-6, 11-11-4 WCHA) fell to Lake Superior State by a 3-0 final to wrap up the season series with the Lakers.

LSSU was able to score three times in the third period to take the final game, but NMU was able to retain possession of the Cappo Cup going 3-1-0 in the season series.

"We played hard," commented head coach Walt Kyle following the game.  "I knew the third period was going to be tough today and I knew if we'd get that game we were going to need to score some goals early and play a solid defensive game.  We didn't do that and got behind and we had to chase it a bit.  Our guys played hard and we didn't get the win but I give them credit."

The Lakers came out in the first period outshooting the Wildcats 18-10 but NMU was able to fend off two Laker power plays in the opening period.

Junior goalie Michael Doan opened the night with 18 saves including five shots during the two penalty kills.

Northern Michigan bounced back in the second period to outshoot the Lakers 19-13 with Doan saving all 13 sent his way.

The Wildcats opened the third period on the power play but were unable to convert but were able to create some momentum in the opening minutes.  Sophomore defenseman Brock Maschmeyer nearly put NMU on the board when he took a pass from across the ice but the puck wouldn't trickle in after hitting the left pipe.

Shortly after the near score, the Lakers would score a pair of goals just 39-seconds apart.  LSSU leading scorer Stephen Perfetto cushioned the lead at the 10:32 mark with an unassisted goal to put the Lakers ahead 3-0.

The Lakers held the advantage in shots for the third by a 13-10 margin for a game total of 44 with the Wildcats sending 39 shots at the net in the game.

Doan finished with 36 saves in 50:32 while sophomore net minder Derek Dunrecorded five saves in 9:28 of action.

Senior forward Reed Seckel led NMU with five shots on the night with fellow senior forward Ryan Kesti and freshman defenseman Zach Urban each blocking three shots.

Northern Michigan finishes the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against rival Michigan Tech.
