Eskymos, Leisenring Praised For Academic Success

ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School football team is being praised for is success off of the field. The team was again an All-State selection in academics with a combined 3.84 grade point average.

Escanaba was the sixth-best in the state in Division Four, and made the top ten list for a third straight year. U.P. Dream Team lineman Chad Leisenring was also a first team Academic All State selection.

He is the first EHS individual ever to make the First Team All-State list.

Also from the Upper Peninsula on the First Team list: Jess Mazzon of Bessemer.

In Division Eight, Lake Linden-Hubbell (3.8 GPA) made the All-State Academic List, the fourth-best team grade point average in Michigan.

Escanaba was also a recipient of the Steve Spicer Team Leadership Award for 2014.

"This is a very big deal," Eskymo Coach Jim Hansen said. "Only about 30 schools in Michigan have ever received this award, and we're only the second in the U.P."

"Basically, it honors the kids and coaches of a program who provide service and leadership that have nothing to do with football."

Some of the community projects that the Eskymos took part in:

Helped disabled people in and out of boats so they could experience fishing as part of the Wheelin Sporstmen program.

Helped set up for the National Trappers Association Convention.

Helped set up for the UP Wildlife Association Banquet.

Participated in the Mo Buddy progra.

Participated in elementary reading programs.

Visited elderly and disabled members of the community at different homes.

Officiated youth football games.
