Marquette, Ishpeming, Chassell Sweep U.P. Titles

MARQUETTE---The Marquette High School cross-country teams won both the boys and girls D-1 Upper Peninsula championships on Saturday, but it wasn't easy.

The boys topped Escanaba by ten points while the girls had to hang on to edge Sault Ste. Marie by six points. Marquette did not have an individual U.P. champion, as Kingsford's Nate Carey won the boys race and Gladstone's Leigha Woelffer won the girl's race.

But Marquette's depth came through to win both races, on its home course.

IN DIVISION TWO, the North Central Jets moved up from Division Three, which it won on the boys side last year. This year, the Jets had two top-ten runners in Bryce Holle (second overall) and Seth Polfus (eighth). But nobody could keep up with Ironwood's Jared Koski, who won the race by almost two full minutes.

Ishpeming had six boys in the top 16 and won the boys team title, with NCA second.

Ishpeming also won the D-2 girls race, with four of the top eight runners, led by Khora Swanson in fifth place. Westwood's Kathryn Etelmaki won the race in 20:51, with West Iron County's Tori Harris-Hogaboom second, 45 seconds behind.

Manistique did not have enough runners to have a team score in either race. But Emerald Phillip Hagenson was fourth overall in the boys race and classmate Olivia Holmberg was third overall in the girls race.

IN DIVISION THREE, Chassell edged Stephenson and Munising for the boys championship, with all three schools within seven points of each other. Munising's Grady Herst was the overall winner, with Stephenson's Connor Cappaert second. Chassell had three of the top 20 runners, while Munising and Stephenson both had two of the top ten, but no other runners finished in the top 20 for either school.

Rapid River did not have a team score, but Jared Anderson finished 16th.

In the girls race, Chassell made it a clean sweep, but the Panther girls were able to do it with a little more ease...by 26 points over second place St. Ignace. Newberry's Natalie Beaulieu won the race. Chassell had runners place fifth, sixth, and seventh.
