Tech Gets Dramatic Win On Wildcat Homecoming

MARQUETTE---A 39-yard last second field goal by Michigan Tech kicker Garrett Mead handed the Northern Michigan University football team a 34-31 loss in the Miner's Cup game at the Superior Dome Saturday.

The game concluded the Homecoming week celebration and was played in front of 6,427 fans which is the ninth largest crowd in Superior Dome history.

"It was a heartbreaking deal for us, it was the second week in a row," said NMU head coach Chris Ostrowsky. "I love everything about this team, anybody who understands football will look at this team and see that we are fighting.

"This is a team that has a tremendous amount of character and is well coached. I am really excited to lead this group and these kids."

"This game had all the ebbs and flows," said MTU head coach Tom Kearly. "We're fortunate to get the win. I want to give a lot of credit to Northern Michigan. They played hard and played well. It's a great rivalry. The Miner's Cup is worth about 12 bucks, but it's priceless to have. We've got it for another year."

The loss drops the Wildcats to 1-3 and 0-3 in GLIAC action while the Huskies improved to 4-0 overall and 4-0 league play.

Michigan Tech scored first when John Williams connected with Andrew Clark for a 43-yard pass with 5:02 left in the first quarter.

A Garrett Mead PAT gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead.

NMU sophomore quarterback Shaye Brown connected with junior wide receiver Marcus Tucker with 10:23 left in the second quarter on a 41-yard touchdown bomb. The PAT from freshman kicker Ryan LaBerge tied the game at 7-7 for NMU.

Tyler Scarlett then connected with Brandon Cowie on a 15-yard touchdown pass and Charlie Leffingwell ran in another score in the second quarter to give the Huskies a 21-7 lead.

Before the half, Brown connected with junior wide receiverAustin Young on a 16-yard touchdown pass to cut the Michigan Tech lead to 21-14 with 13-seconds left in the half.

The Wildcats came out strong in the third quarter, taking advantage of a fumbled punt return from Michigan Tech's Brett Gervais on the Huskies 11 yard line.

Junior running back Wyatt Jurasin scored on the next play for the Wildcats to tie the game at 21-21 with 10:08 left in the third quarter. NMU then picked up two points on a safety after a snap sailed over the head of MTU punter Ryan VanGoethem.

VanGoethem tried to recover the snap but was unable to and kicked the ball out the back of the end zone to avoid a Wildcats touchdown, but put NMU on top 23-21.

Leffingwell gave Michigan Tech back the lead when he ran in a 31-yard touchdown score with 2:06 left in the third. Mead then connected on a 39-yard field goal with 11:34 left in the game to give MTU a 31-23 lead.

Tucker then scored for NMU on a 10-yards touchdown pass from Brown.

The Wildcats were down 31-29 with only 1:47 left to go and went for the two-point conversion on the ensuing PAT.

Tucker took the handoff from Brown and then handed it off to Young who threw the ball to Brown who was uncovered in the end zone to convert the two-point try.

"We have a couple of two-point plays and we practice them all every week. That is the one we chose to go with and luckily for us it happened to work out," said Ostrwosky.

But the Huskies came back.

Scarlett rushed four times and threw four times on the game-winning drive, the key play being a 23-yard completion to Cowie on third-and-10 at midfield.

"We were going to punt if we didn't hit that," Kearly said. "We didn't really have a choice. Garrett had a bad week last week, but I said we were going to stick with him. He's never lost us a game, and he's won us three or four. Now it's four or five."

Michigan Tech's field goal as time expired handed the Huskies the game.

Scarlett finished 22-of-34 for 302 yards and a touchdown. Cowie was the recipient of nine passes for 135 yards. Leffingwell gained 81 yards and two scores on 21 attempts.

The Wildcats racked up 307 yards of total offense while Brown threw for 254 yards going 18-35 with three touchdowns and one interception. Tucker led NMU with 79 yards through the air and two touchdowns while Young had 74 yards and one score. Jurasin led the Wildcats with 61 yards on the ground on 17 attempts.

Sophomore DB and return man CJ Washington had 83 yards on four kick returns while tucker had 61 yards on two returns. Young added 60 punt return yards. Tucker had 140 all-purpose yards while Young had 134.

Sophomore linebacker Dalton Stenberg led the Wildcats with nine tackles while junior linebacker Levi Perry and sophomore defensive linemanJared Vuksan added seven tackles each.

The Wildcats return to action on Oct. 4 when they travel to Saginaw Valley State for a 7 p.m. match up. The Huskies, who remained undefeated at 4-0, now have a bye week on their schedule. Their next game is Oct. 11 at Northwood.
