Broncos Hang On For Rare Win At North Dickinson

FELCH---The Bark River-Harris Broncos got touchdowns from Alex Mathias, Hunter Messersmith, and  Jordin Sodergren, and then held on to beat the North Dickinson Nordics, 22-18, on Friday. It was the first Bronco victory in Felch since 1990.

BR-H had not defeated North Dickinson at all since 2003.

"We held on," Broncos Coach Al Stenberg said. "We scored when we needed to and we had just enough defense to get the win."

Bark River-Harris got a five-yard touchdown run from Messersmith to take a 22-12 lead, and all seemed to be good for the Broncos in the fourth quarter. But the Nordics managed to get a long touchdown pass to Noah Berg late in the game to make it 22-18.

North Dickinson went for the on-side kick, and got it on a close play near midfield. The Nordics went for the winning score, but the pass was intercepted by A.J. Emmons.

"That sealed the game for us," a relieved Stenberg said.

Messersmith had 54 yards on 14 carries and that touchdown, which is his tenth of the season in just five games. Alex Mathias had 101 yards on 18 carries, including a nine-yard touchdown run. The Broncos had 252 yards of total offense; 212 of it was on the ground.

BR-H (4-1) won its fourth straight game after a season-opening loss at Forest Park. The Broncos matched the school's combined win total for the past four seasons. Prior to this season, BR-H had a combined 4-32 record for the four years between 2010-2013.

Bark River-Harris hosts Stephenson for Bronco Homecoming next Friday night.

Game time is 7:00 E.T. It will be the last meeting between the teams, as Stephenson has decided to switch to eight-man football in the 2015 season.

BR-H is not making that move.

Stephenson lost at home to Newberry, 35-16, Friday night.
