Menominee Maroons Smack Braves Down To Earth
MENOMINEE---Justin Jurek's Facebook status pretty much summed it up: "Well, that was humbling." Jurek and the Gladstone Braves were flying high with a three-game winning streak heading into Menominee's Blesch Stadium Friday night. And the Braves were flattened in every phase of the game as the Maroons rolled to a 49-6 victory. Four different running backs scored touchdowns, and quarterback Justin Brilinski completed six of eleven passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half. Aeron Forsberg had a 30-yard touchdown run and Brilinski rushed four straight times for 48 yards and another score, as the Maroons led, 14-0, just 3:20 into the game. Gladstone went three-and-out on their first two series, and short punts into a gale force wind helped the Maroons get good field position. The Braves finally put togeher a couple of first downs on their third series, but on 4th-and-5, Tyler Wells' long pass went off the hands of receiver Jake Peterson at the Menominee 20 yard-line. It took Menominee just five plays to score another touchdown, this time on a 39-yard pass to Forsberg on the second play of the second quarter. That made it a 21-0 game. Gladstone managed two first downs on its next possession, but the drive ended when Wells' long pass to Peterson was intercepted by Brilinski at the Maroon 16 yard line. The Maroons easily navigated the 82 yards over the next six plays, with Keifer Rasner scoring from seven yards out. Erik Pohlman made his fourth kick, and it was 28-0. On 4th and 10 from the Braves' 40, Brilinski threw to Forsberg in front of the Gladstone bench. Forsberg was being tackled shy of the first down, but he shoveled to Rasner for a 'hook-n-ladder' touchdown. It was 35-0 at halftime, and then the second half began as Forsberg took the line drive opening kickoff and sprinted 85 yards down the middle of the field. The touchdown made it 42-0, and the second half was played on the mercy rule's running clock. Gladstone broke the shutout late in the third quarter as Wells scored from seven yards out, after Jurek's 37-yard run set the Braves up in Menominee territory. Jurek ended up with 100 yards on 17 carries while Wells gained 59 yards on 19 touches. Wells completed five of eleven passes, but for just 29 yards and an interception. While Menominee improved to 4-0 in their home opener, the Braves were brought down to earth with their first loss after three wins. But Gladstone has the chance to put this loss in the past when the team hosts Marquette on Homecoming next Friday night. Next Friday's game will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. The broadcast will start at 6:45 E.T. REDMEN TOP ESKYMOS---Marquette improved to 3-1 Friday night with a 24-22 win over Escanaba. The Redmen took advantage of three Eskymo turnovers in the first half to build a 21-8 lead, and then held on in the second half as Escanaba rallied with two touchdowns. Escanaba quarterback Logan Lamb had 214 yards rushing in the loss. He outgained the entire Marquette team, which had just 147 yards of total offense. BRONCOS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT---The Bark River-Harris Broncos rolled past the Gwinn Model Towners, 58-16, Friday night in Harris. Quarterback Hunter Messersmith had another strong game, and Iver Stenberg had touchdown runs of 63 and 70 yards in his first varsity football game. Alex Mathias and Jake Greenfield also found the end zone for Bark River-Harris. The Broncos are now 3-1, with three blowout wins. |
