Braves Optimistic As Football Practice Gets Started

GLADSTONE---The Gladstone High School football team went 0-9 in 2013.

But the Braves are looking for better things unde a revamped offense and the fact that the players are more familiar with Coach Cody Kangas than they were a year ago.

The Braves held their first practice early Monday morning at just past midnight, the very first moment allowed under MHSAA rules.

"This is fun, it's a good experience," Gladstone senior running back Justin Jurek said about the midnight practice. "It's nice to be under the lights. We're doing something that most teams aren't doing, and we're staying out of the heat."

"It's kind of like we're getting a head start on them (other teams)," Gladstone senior quarterback Tyler Wells said. "It's always fun playing under the lights. We're going to get the community involved and show them what we have this year."

Gladstone Head Coach Cody Kangas said his team will be better this year.

"We play a difficult schedule in a difficult conference," Kangas said. "Offensively, we've made some changes. I talked to the coaching staff and we kind of went back to what the majority of us know. Same thing with defense. Back to the basics. I think when people come to the games and we step onto the field, it will be a different Gladstone team."

Gladstone opens the 2014 season at home against Gwinn on Thursday, Aug. 28.

All Braves football games are broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
