Delta County Women Compete At Boston Marathon

BOSTON---The nightmare of the 2013 terrorist bombings at the Boston Marathon was still fresh in the minds of the men and women who returned to Boston on Monday to take part in the 2014 event.

With tightened security in place, more than 36,000 runners competed in various divisions in a show of defiance to the brothers who ruined the 2013 race.

Escanaba native Kaylyn Bernard was there last year when the pressure cookers filled with metal fragments exploded near the finish line, killing three people and hurting more than 200 others.

Bernard's mom, Jayne Szukalowski, was also there last year...and this year.

"It's been emotional, but I'll tell you, Boston is strong," Szukalowski said in an interview with RRN as the race was still going on on Monday. "It's been an emotional, exciting experience, and we're grateful to be here."

Szukalowski says that her daughter never questioned whether to return to Boston.

"We have to face our fears,' Szukalowski said. "These folks are crossing the finish line for what we call their 'second race'. It's very, very emotional. There's a lot of tears, but it's tears of joy."

"There's nothing like the Boston Marathon," she continued. "You are amongst the most elite athletes, elite runners. It's extremely expiring. I'm very, very proud of her."

Gladstone High School graduate Lindsey Lusardi also competed in the Marathon. It was the first time for the 21-year-old, and she finished in three hours, 28 minutes. As usual, a runner from the African nation of Kenya was the winner of the woman's race.
