Gladstone's Solis Wins Gold At 'NUWAY' Nationals
BATTLE CREEK, Mich.---The National United Wrestling Association National Championships were held Sunday in downstate Battle Creek. Seven Gladstone boys were a part of the event...and they were the only Upper Peninsula wrestlers to compete in the event. Gladstone Second grader Austin Solis won the biggest prize at Kellogg Arena: a gold medal, a national championship. In the Division Two 56-pound bracket, Solis began the day with a quick pin (31 seconds) against Lynkyn Ratcliff from the Viper Wrestling Club out of Indiana. Then in the second round, Solis beat another Indiana wrestler (Brady Ison) on a 2-1 decision. Then in the gold medal match, Solis beat Jack Mills from New Boston, Mich., on a 4-0 decision. Solis had finished third at the Michigan state finals (MYWAY). Seventh grader Adam Bruce finished fourth in the D-5 118-pound weight class. He lost his first match on Sunday, but then won four straight matches to make it to the third place match (one on a bye, another on an injury default, two on decisions). Bruce lost to Zac Bellaire of Dundee, Mich., 2-0, and took fourth. Bruce had also lost to Bellaire at the state tournament several weeks ago. Gladstone's Bryce Carlson finished third in the D-1 43-pound weight class, beating Jayden Marcano-Cruz of the West Michigan Pursuit, 5-2, in Sunday's third place match. In the Division Three 59-pound bracket, Michael Brazaeu finished fourth. And in the D-3 68-pound bracket, Hunter Solis finished fifth, winning his final match over Ethan Logan of Ohio on a pin in 2:53. In D-2, Drew Hanson finished eighth in the 52-pound bracket. And in the Division Four 95-pound bracket, Cole Hansen finished in fifth place. |
