Chaillier Wins H.S. 'Hobey Baker' Character Award
ESCANABA---Escanaba High School senior defenseman Derek Chaillier took home a lot of hardware during this week's post-season hockey banquet at the House of Ludington. The Eskymo captain got his awards for being Division Two First Team All-State, Great Lakes Hockey Conference First Team, and for winning his team's Defensive Player of the Year award. Chaillier was also one of four Eskymos to be named All-State for academics. But this high school award is named after the same man, and it has been given out to high school hockey players since 2003. Chaillier was the winner this year for the Escanaba Eskymos. Coach Matt Hughes praised Chaillier during this week's banquet, noting that he got the job done on both the offensive and defensive ends of the rink. Hughes also praised Chaillier's leadership abilities. "He enjoyed making players on the other teams look silly with his moves," Hughes smiled. The award was established to honor high school hockey players who "exemplify the Hobey Baker ideal that "Character Builds Excellence." Candidates for a High School Hobey Baker Award are selected by their coaches, based on the following criteria: integrity and positive attitude, coachability, outstanding sportsmanship, and community spirit. And he took just four penalty minutes all season long, which kept him on the ice for nearly every power play or penalty-killing situation. In his junior year, Chaillier had eight goals and 33 assists for 41 points. And he had a +42 that season. In his sophomore season, Chaillier had four goals and 11 assists for 15 points and a +12 rating. In all three years, he took a grand total of 30 minutes of penalties. Chaillier will be looking for a team to play on once he graduates from high school this spring. He should get some looks from coaches who want a "complete player", an offensive defenseman who had 24 goals, 82 assists, and 106 points over three years. This "character" award may be the icing on the cake. |
